Pendant un moment j'ai été fasciné par ces gigantesques panneaux publicitaires mécaniques. En filmant l'un d'eux, j'ai réalisé que ce qui m'intéressait, c'était le mouvement de l'image se détachant du cadre pour en laisser une autre apparaître, comme le rideau rouge au théâtre. Avec la caméra on peut cadrer le monde, et re-cadrer l'image, et par là contraindre ce panneau dans un statut ambigü : ou bien une variété d'images glissantes ou un panneau, seul dans la rue. De près, la reproduction infinie des images, de loin un medium situé, seul et propriété exclusive d'une société privée. D'abord pour augmenter le flux jusqu'à ce qu'on n'en voie plus que le principe, puis pour identifier le format de la publicité au format 4:3 celui de la diffusion télévisuelle. Comme il le permet, j'ai mis toute les images possibles dans ce panneau, et il est devenu comme le JT, mais ici ce ne sont pas les news mais l'actualité du contenu publicitaire, l'image actuelle. Sans tube cathodique, que nous le regardions ou pas, le panneau semble être une télévision préhistorique, ou la résurgence du temps de l'ORTF et de son unique canal.
For a while, I have been fascinated by these mechanical panels made for giant advertising. One day, while I was shooting one of them, I realized that it was the movement of the picture detaching from the borders to let another appear, like the red curtain of a theater, which interested me. With the camera, we can center the picture, and constrain the panel to be an ambiguous thing : a diversity of slippery pictures, or to be a single panel along the street. On one hand, the infinite reproduction of pictures, on the other hand a located medium, and the exclusive private property of an ad society. On one hand, in order to identify the 4:3 broadcast format with the ads dimensions, on the other hand to increase the stream until we can only see its principle. As it allows it, I put every picture possible in this panel, and they becomed like the TV news, but here, they’re the new advertising. Without a cathode ray tube, the panel becomes a single-channel TV, we watch it or not.
